Artist Statement

FIELD STUDIES
The “Fields” in these works, particularly those on paper, are a response to the fascination I have
for the fabric of vegetation that clothes the land. The Earth’s carpet.
I draw an analogy with another fascination; textile arts such as Turkish carpets, antique Kashmiri
shawls Medieval tapestries, Scottish tweeds. Their textures, colours patterns seem, at times to
mimic the natural fields and vise versa.
Unlike the textiles, though, the natural fields change constantly in response to daily and seasonal
conditions. Not unlike Monet’s water garden.
An equally apt title for the works could be Depth of Field , for while the focus may be on the
largely flat areas of surface detail, most have a strong recession to a distant horizon.
This can imply an almost infinite space.
The works with a more emphatic horizon line, however, might imply the edge of a finite world.
Beyond this, there is a far less hospitable environment than the one we have here.
This fabric of vegetation is but a thin covering. It is resilient, but is vulnerable to a great many
threats.
Perhaps it would be best if we try to keep the Earth’s clothes on.
