ARTIST STATEMENT

The work in this exhibition is marked by a shift back to figurative elements and mixed media with collaged components. There is a continuation of abstracted passages that draw on landscape components and allude to forms of text, scripts, cyphers and codes.
The figurative elements engage themes of dancing and a range of other modes of physical action and movement. I have developed subjects that are based on a metaphorical combination of arboreal forms of trees and vines with human figures.
The collaged pieces on cotton fabric are made by lifting images pressed from painted figurative and abstract subjects. This results in layered levels within the works.
I have interwoven gestural, expressive mark making and painting components throughout different pieces in varying degrees. The allusion to a tension between child-like autographic scribbling and quite considered and intentional passages continue as a staple element in my work.
Indicative stylistic and thematic aspects of my ongoing work are also prevalent in my use of titles of works and suites of works. The gallery has a list of brief, outline comments that I have made on these. They are available upon request. They are broader in range than I can produce here. But you still have figure it out for yourself.
